A Brief Business History

In 2000 we were operating Town & Country Auto Repair. We decided to start Horse Country in the same building - in a 10x12 room - with just a small amount of tack. Don has raised and bred Paint horses for many years so it was a natural addition, and we were encouraged by friends and neighbors a tack store was needed in the community. With several horse barns, the Ft. Leavenworth Hunt Club, and many avid horsemen in the area, we thought it would be a nice small business to add

Our first expansion came in 2001; we cleared out an adjacent room and added a 16x50 area. This allowed us to carry a much larger inventory and supplements. In 2002 the business had taken on a life of its own and literally consumed the entire 6,000 sq. ft. building. We added a Purina Feed dealership, thus completing the tack and feed store. By 2003 our pet supply side was rapidly taking off, so we added many quality national pet food brands to our inventory as well.

Growth has been consistent, and as a result we have a very dedicated customer base. We are customer service oriented, bringing back the lost art of a "mom and pop" approach to personal customer service. Our Kansas Country family of customers know they will find us open when we should be, available to stay late when they need us, and working behind the counter to assure their special needs are met.

In October of 2005, we were flooded by a freak storm that brought 13 inches of rain in just a few hours. We lost everything: trucks, trailers, forklifts, computers and inventory, grain, and even all our documents. Our customers discovered what had happened and some of them even beat us to the store. They literally stopped their lives to help us recover, jokingly telling us that we had no choice - they wanted us to start over.

Over the years, we have seen a substantial growth in the business. News is spreading fast now and we see new customers almost daily. As a result of this growth and the constant requests for more products, we feel the most recent expansion this past November (to becoming a Purina Premier Store) was needed to fully serve our loyal customers as well as the community at large.

For our equine and agricultural customers we have added the full line of Nutrena Feeds. We added work and western wear and a much larger gift shop, specializing in Kansas and Missouri produced merchandise and are proud to say most items in the gift and home decorating area are "Made in the USA."

Our new coffee lounge, appropriately called "THE LOAFING SHED" offers barista quality coffee's, teas, and homemade desserts in a cozy, relaxed atmosphere where taking your time is encouraged.

Our growth also prompted the need for the name change to "Kansas Country Store." Many people still thought we were a "horse" store and hesitated to come in. But in recent years as word of mouth and advertising has proven successful, we are increasingly growing the pet, gift, and clothing, as well as the agricultural side of the business.
